How to Prevent Eye Strain
Let’s say that you enjoy staying up late at night to read. It’s something you’ve done since you were a child, until one of your parents has to come in and tell you to go to sleep. With the rise of e-readers, tablets, and smartphones, reading in the low light has become even more common. Here’s how to prevent eye strain, no matter what you’re reading!
Look Away
The first thing to do is rest your eyes. Look away from the screen as frequently as you can. Even if you are reading a regular book, you should look up and close your eyes for a few minutes every twenty minutes or so.
If you’ve ever heard of the 20-20-20 rule, then this is a good rule of thumb for preventing and reducing eye strain. Every twenty minutes, try looking at something that is about twenty feet about from you. Concentrate on it for twenty seconds, and then you can go back to what you were reading. Take a break for several hours if you can. If you are reading before bed, it’s time to turn out the lights once your eyes get heavy.
Move the Screen
Eye strain happens much more quickly than normal if you are spending hours on a computer. Move the computer screen to a more comfortable position. Even if you are using a different screen, keep it as far away from your face as you can. You can always magnify the text and images to see them better. Keep it at arm’s length and below eye level to make it easier on your eyes.
Try Eye Drops
Another way to prevent eye strain is to try eye drops. These drops can help moisten your eyes, which will dry out if you don’t blink enough. You can also train your eyes to blink more often if you need to when you’re working on a screen.
How to Treat It
Some simple changes are all you need to treat eye strain. Consider the methods above. If those aren’t enough, then you’ll have to speak to your eye doctor. This is especially important if the symptoms and discomfort don’t subside after you’re done resting your eyes. You might need a new prescription for your glasses, or there is something else affecting your eyes that you might not know about yet.
