Science Says: Reading is Good For You
For years, reading has been considered an intellectual pastime. But now, science has confirmed that it is good for you beyond sharpening your mind. Here are some scientifically-proven reasons to read as much as possible.
Reading Boosts Creativity
Studies done at the University of Toronto discovered that reading enhances your capacity for creative thinking. That said, this only holds true for when you read fiction. So if you are an aspiring author you should be reading as often as possible – read fiction inside your genre and outside of it too, to become more well-rounded stylistically, and with enough patience, you’ll come up with a new, exciting idea that has never been done before. Reading nonfiction helps you to learn, reading fiction gives you new ways to apply your learning
You’ll Live Longer
Yale researchers conducted a study on readers who were already in their 50s. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects that reading had when the subjects read for half an hour every day. On average, those readers lived almost two years longer than the participants who didn’t read and those who only read magazines – twenty-three months longer, to be precise.
Accomplishing Tangible Goals
Creating a tangible goal can be a great motivator, especially if you need encouragement to keep going. Consider the reading challenges you set for yourself: three books in thirty days, for example. Although at first it might seem like an impossible goal, if you were to aim higher – say, forty or fifty books in a year, it is possible. It just depends on your reading speed, what you’re reading, and if you are enjoying it. Change your habits – the time you spend on your electronic devices could be spent with a good book – or even an e-book if you prefer to read that way.
You’ll Be More Successful
By and large, some of the world’s most notable and successful people read constantly. Reading, and particularly a love of reading, has always been associated with higher education levels. The more highly educated you are, the more reasonable it is to expect a higher level of success in return.
