Take a Trip to Some of These Famous Libraries
With Halloween about to happen later this week, there’s still time to get in on the spooky spirit. Some of the most famous books in literature are scary stories, whether they’re the works of Edgar Allan Poe, Stephen King, or Shirley Jackson. Even after the holiday has ended, take a trip to some of these famous libraries around the world and read to your heart’s content.
New York Public Library
The New York Public Library happens to be one of the most well-known libraries in the country, and indeed, around the world. They’re also one of the largest systems to be found anywhere, as the NYPL reported that in 2016 alone they had 18 million visitors and circulated 23 million items across their 92 locations, which is already a tremendous accomplishment.
National Library of China
The next stop on our tour of libraries around the world takes us to Beijing, where we find the National Library of China (NLC). It is over a century old, having first been established as the Imperial Library of Peking back in 1909. Since then, it has become the largest library in all of Asia, as it counts 35 million items in its collection. Think of how many titles that is!
Library of Congress
Another place to look at all the titles on display is at the Library of Congress. As it is located in Washington, DC, it is considerably closer to home than either the NYPL or the NLC. First founded in 1800, it has become the largest library in America and probably ranks amongst the largest in the world. The LOC had almost 2 million visitors in 2017 to browse over 167,000 items found on 838 total miles of bookshelves.
The British Library
You’re bound to find and read a good book at the British Library in London. It’s on par, size-wise, with the Library of Congress, as they have over 150 million items – but a large portion of them, you won’t find anywhere else in the world.
Trinity College Library
Once you’re done in London, you can take a trip up to Dublin and visit the Trinity College Library. Here, you’ll join about a million other visitors at the largest library in all of Ireland, which had 964,000 visitors in 2017. See the famed Book of Kells and the Long Room, two of the most famous parts of this library.
