Soft Cover Binding Solutions

Soft cover books are bound using a process known as perfect binding. In this process, a book block is assembled from pre-collated, pre-cut loose sheets. A soft cover is applied, and hot melt EVA or PUR glues are used to bond the pages together and apply the cover.

The advantage of perfect binding is that is can be done very quickly, so a lot of material can be bound in a short amount of time. The finished product is solid and durable, which is another benefit of this binding style.

Here are a few different techniques we use to bind our soft cover books.

PUR Binding

PUR binding uses PUR glue to bind the pages and cover. The advantages of this technique are numerous. It results in a product that is very flexible, but prevents page pulls and spine cracking. It can maintain integrity in a wide range of temperatures. PUR-bound books also lay flat, which is a very desirable property. In addition PUR is great for digital printing, because it can handle a wide range of printed stocks and inks.

Smyth Sewn Glue-On Cover Binding

This perfect binding technique results in one of the most durable soft-cover products available. The signatures are sewn together using a technique known as Smyth sewing, which makes them incredibly strong. These products will lay flat, and can be bent backwards easily to be placed on a copy machine. For a product that needs to be able to withstand heavy usage, Smyth sewing is your answer.
