How does case binding work?

The process of case binding begins when pre-collated, pre-cut loose sheets are adhesive bound or sewn along the spine of the book. Then, finishing options are added. Finally, the hardback case is glued onto the book. The case itself can be made from a number of materials, including leather, cloth, paper, or lamination. The spine itself can be rounded, flat, or tight backed, which gives additional support to heavy books.

Smyth sewn hard cover books

Smyth sewn hard cover books are named for the technique known as Smyth sewing, which involves sewing thread through the backfold of a signature at the spine, and doing this for each individual signature. This creates the strongest bind of any technique, and the book will also lay flat.

Adhesive bound hard cover books

This commonly-used case binding technique involves the use of a strong adhesive to bind signatures together. This is popular for binding digitally printed book runs.

Fully concealed wire-bound hardback books

This case binding technique actually integrates the mechanical binding practice of the Wire-O, expect the wire is fully concealed, which creates a more durable product that will also lay flat.
