3 Beautiful Libraries Across the US

The Boston Public Library

The Boston Public Library is not only beautiful but it can boast quite an accomplishment: it was the United States’ first free public library. The original building was built in 1854 and when demand quickly outpaced the space, a new building was completed in 1895 at the library’s current location in Copley Square. An addition was needed in 1972 and was designed by famous American architect Phillip Johnson. Today the library is home to over 16,000 texts that include collections of rare book, manuscripts, maps, and prints.

The George Peabody Library

Maryland is home to its own historic beautiful library, located in the historic Mount Vernon neighborhood of Baltimore. As part of the Peabody Institute, the library was designed by Baltimore architect Edmund George Lind and opened in 1878. The Peabody library is famous for its huge ceilings and cast-iron balconies that span 5 stories. Home to over 300,000 books, visitors to the Peabody library are sure to find something that tickles their fancy.

The New York Public Library

The gorgeous Beaux-Arts style Stephen A. Schwarzman building is home to the central branch of the New York Public Library. The building took 9 years before it was finally completed in 1911 and cost over $9 million. This beautiful library can accommodate up to 50,000 visitors and is home to a large collection of historical materials such as ancient manuscripts and beautiful Japanese scrolls as well as more modern items such as comic books and baseball cards.
